In "Narcissu," an unnamed protagonist learns they have lung cancer just after turning twenty and is admitted to a hospice in Mito, Ibaraki. There, they meet Setsumi, a slightly older woman also battling a terminal illness. Both share a desire to avoid dying in a hospital or at home with their families. They decide to run away together using the protagonist's father's silver Honda Integra. Their journey takes them across Japan's highways and various prefectures without a set goal at first. Eventually, they choose to head westward toward the narcissus fields in the southern part of Awaji Island.
