In "Life," Ayumu Shiiba struggles with her studies but works hard to get into Nishidate High School alongside her best friend, Yuuko Shinozuka. Despite her effort, Shinozuka fails the entrance exam and directs her pent-up bitterness towards Ayumu. Overwhelmed by grief over her lost friendship, Ayumu finds temporary relief through self-harm and withdraws from others, becoming an outcast at her new school. Her world begins to shift when Manami Anzai, a classmate, reaches out to befriend her, offering a spark of hope. But Ayumu remains unaware of the terrifying ordeal soon to face her. "Life" follows Ayumu’s journey of isolation, a story filled with despair and torment that pushes one to the edge of madness. Yet, despite the overwhelming obstacles, only those with unyielding strength will find the light ahead.

Life won the 30th Kodansha Manga Award in the Shoujo category in 2006. The first nine volumes of the series were published in English by Tokyopop from April 11, 2006, to June 10, 2008, before the license was dropped. The manga was republished digitally in English by Kodansha USA from March 7, 2023 to November 5, 2024. The manga was adapted into a live-action TV drama that aired from June 30, 2007, to September 15, 2007.
