In a future Japan where the plummeting birth rate has become a national crisis, the government enforces the "Yukari Law," a system that pairs citizens at age 16 based on genetic compatibility. Known as "The Red Threads of Science," this program is widely accepted, promising happiness to those who follow it and imposing penalties on those who resist. Yukari Nejima is approaching his 16th birthday and feels the mounting pressure. He decides to confess his feelings to Misaki Takasaki, the stunning and popular girl he has admired for a long time. To his surprise, she reciprocates. But as they share a tender moment, Yukari receives his official government notice: he is matched with Ririna "Snooty" Sanada, a blunt and honest young woman. Caught between lies and genuine emotion, Yukari holds onto his true feelings.

The series was adapted to anime, and a live-action film which released in Japan on October 18, 2017.
