In Mardock City, acts of compassion are seldom seen, especially for a girl like Rune Balot, who survives as a homeless child prostitute. Her luck appears to change when casino manager Shell Septinos takes her in, giving her hope for a brighter life. But his real motives are revealed when he tries to murder her, nearly succeeding. As Rune loses consciousness, Dr. Easter steps in, saving her life with an operation that gives her superhuman abilities—enhanced senses and the power to control electronics—though it costs her her voice, a price she finds acceptable. Armed with these new powers, and aided by Dr. Easter and a small mouse named Œufcoque Penteano, Rune sets out for revenge against Shell Septinos, the man who brought her to the brink of death.
