Koe no Katachi

In "Koe no Katachi," Shouya Ishida, a young elementary school student, grows unsettled when Shouko Nishimiya, a reserved girl with hearing difficulties, transfers to his class. Soon, Shouya and his peers start tormenting Shouko, subjecting her to relentless ridicule and cruelty. School life becomes a living hell for Shouko as the bullying continues unchecked, with teachers showing little concern for her plight. The film explores the harrowing experience of Shouko facing relentless bullying, while also examining themes of hope, remorse, and the possibility of redemption.

Background

Although Koe no Katachi won the 80th Weekly Shounen Magazine Newbie Best Mangaka Award in 2008, its content made it difficult for publication in any manga magazine. It was published—after months of legal dispute—in the February issue of Bessatsu Shounen Magazine in 2011, where it got first place in the questionnaires. As a result, Yoshitoki Ooima's debut became the manga version of Mardock Scramble. The one-shot was re-published in the 12th issue of the 2013 Weekly Shounen Magazine.
