As a high school sophomore, his low self-esteem stops him from trying to improve, blaming his failures on a world with no clear system for self-improvement. Aoi Hinami, a highly admired student with a perfect academic record, is the ideal heroine and stands at the opposite end of the social scale from Tomozaki. But when they unexpectedly meet, Tomozaki learns that Hinami is not as flawless as she seems. This sets up a story about Tomozaki learning to master real life with Hinami's help, blending drama and romance.

The light novel ranked four times in the top 10 in the Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! for the Light Novels category from 2017 to 2019 and in 2021. The series has been published in English as Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki by Yen Press since July 30, 2019.
