In the ducal family, Sylph Biebel is fated to marry Prince Mikhail Luxborn and eventually rule the kingdom. But her true dream is to become a librarian, an ambition seen as impossible for someone of her noble rank. Driven by her love for the freedom found in books, Sylph often sneaks into the royal library disguised as a commoner. During these visits, she meets Kanna Copierne, another book lover who is also a noble hiding her identity. Even after discovering each other's real selves, their friendship continues until Sylph introduces Kanna to Mikhail. After this meeting, Kanna accuses Sylph of being a jealous villain plotting her death. As a result, Sylph is locked in a small cage and left near the border of the Kingdom of Dagenhelm, meant to be eaten by its human-eating ruler. But Sylph is rescued by Faber, the true king of Dagenhelm, who is actually a young man enchanted by stories. As Faber grows to care for Sylph, there is still a chance for her to find her own fairy-tale ending, even though she has been wrongly cast as a villain.
