In "Blank Canvas: My So-Called Artist's Journey," Akiko Hayashi has precise and ambitious dreams during her school years: she wants to become a manga artist, see her favorite actor star in the anime adaptation of her work, and ultimately marry him. However, Akiko lacks the necessary talent and determination to achieve these goals. When a friend introduces her to an underground art studio run by the strict Kenzou Hidaka, known to all as "Sensei," Akiko joins, believing it will effortlessly enhance her abilities. Instead, she encounters a harsh teacher who shows no interest in manga. Despite the challenging conditions, Akiko commits to Sensei's rigorous training program and starts to understand his genuine concern for his students, forming a strong bond with him. Through Sensei's guidance, Akiko learns the true essence of becoming a mangaka and gains insight into the process of maturing.

Background

Kakukaku Shikajika is an autobiography detailing the life of author Akiko Higashimura. It consecutively ranked in the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for the Female Readers division from 2013 through 2016. In 2015, it won the eighth Manga Taisho Award and the 19th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards Grand Prize. The series was published in English as Blank Canvas: My So-Called Artist's Journey by Seven Seas Entertainment from May 21, 2019, to July 14, 2020.
