A Japanese naval task force embarks for South America in the year 200X. During a severe storm, the JDS Mirai loses communication with its sister ships and is inexplicably transported to 1942, heading toward Midway Island, where a crucial World War II naval battle is about to unfold. The crew of the Mirai must decide whether to intervene and possibly change the course of the war.

Background
Zipang won the 26th Kodansha Manga Award in the General category in 2002. The first four volumes of the series were published in bilingual Japanese-English editions by Kodansha in 2002. It was also released in French by Kana from March 4, 2005, to May 7, 2015. A video game adaptation of the manga was released on the PlayStation 2 by Bandai in Japan on May 26, 2005.
