Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji
賭博黙示録カイジ
Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji
Kaiji Itou, a man down on his luck who often steals car emblems and scratches tires, is one day interrupted by a man in a trench coat named Endou, who turns out to be a debt collector. Endou comes to collect an unpaid loan that Kaiji co-signed for a coworker named Furuhata Takeshi. The original loan was 30,000 yen, but after Takeshi disappeared, the debt was transferred to Kaiji. Kaiji is then offered a way to clear the interest on the debt, which has now grown to 3,850,000 yen. The proposal requires him to board a ship with other financially troubled individuals to take part in gambling activities. On the ship, debtors use borrowed money to gamble, with a few winning while the rest sink deeper into debt and are forced to work off what they owe. After some coercion, Kaiji agrees to participate, hoping to clear his debt and possibly even make some money.
