Summary
Chise serves as the female protagonist of Saikano. She is portrayed as a timid and clumsy individual with low self-esteem, struggling academically except in World History. Due to frequent hospitalizations in Tokyo throughout her elementary school years, she had very few acquaintances, aside from Akemi. With Akemi’s assistance, she begins dating Shuji, striving to nurture the relationship despite his seemingly detached demeanor. Lacking experience in romance, Chise even turns to shoujo manga for guidance. Her life changes drastically when she is forcibly transformed into an ultimate weapon, shifting the narrative focus to her struggle to retain her humanity. As her condition deteriorates, she comes to believe she has lost all human traits, viewing herself solely as a tool for destruction. Shuji helps her reject this nihilistic outlook by reminding her that her capacity to protect what she loves proves her humanity, affirming that love is an emotion exclusive to humans.
