Cartwright, Alexander Joy
Seiyuu / Dub
Summary
Alexander Joy Cartwright is an overweight American admiral whose vocabulary is as colorful as his stature. His name is derived from a founder of the Knickerbocker Club, the first organized baseball league, earning him the title “Father of Baseball.” While his naval uniform is historically accurate for the era of Commodore Matthew Perry, it is anachronistic for the setting of Champloo, as the political entity of America did not yet exist. Upon his ship landing in a small village, Cartwright demands to meet the local leader and threatens to bomb the area with his imposing cannons unless the country immediately opens to foreign trade. He initially mocks Kagemaru for playing with a baseball, but when Kage challenges him and his crew to a game to resolve the dispute, the Americans resort to cheating. Utilizing their massive size, aggressive pitching, and a rigged umpire, they attempt to force a trade agreement through dishonest means.
