Ryuuguu, Reiko

Ryuuguu, Reiko

Summary

Reiko Ryuuguu began her professional life as a designer at a small clothing manufactory in Okinomiya, where she met her husband, Mr. Ryuuguu. The couple married and initially resided in a modest apartment in Okinomiya. Upon becoming pregnant with their daughter Rena, they moved into the home of Rena’s paternal grandmother, staying there until Rena entered elementary school. During this period, the manufacturer employing the Ryuuguus faced financial instability, prompting Reiko to consider going independent alongside a few other designers. Although the situation grew complex, she eventually accepted an offer from a design office in Ibaraki. The firm held her in high regard for her talent and promised her a significant, responsible project. When the family relocated to Ibaraki, Mr. Ryuuguu had to abandon his employment to become a homemaker while Reiko pursued her career. The project she undertook proved to be a major success, leading to increasingly late nights at the office, and occasionally, she would not return home at all due to the demands of large-scale assignments. As her career advanced, Reiko began taking Rena to various outings without informing her husband, such as barbecue parties with her coworkers. Around this time, she entered into an affair with a fellow designer named Mr. Akihito. Recruited by a headhunter to join a larger corporation, she was promoted to a higher position and began earning a substantial six-figure income. In a pivotal moment, Reiko took Rena to a restaurant and shared parfaits with her, fulfilling a childhood dream of the girl. Following this, she demanded that Rena leave her father and come live with her and Mr. Akihito. Rena vehemently rejected the proposal, stating that while her mother could continue her relationship with Mr. Akihito, she was not permitted to divorce her father. It was at this juncture that Reiko revealed she was pregnant. Reiko subsequently sent a lawyer to the household in Ibaraki on multiple occasions but refused to communicate with him in any capacity, including via telephone. This legal pressure caused both Mr. Ryuuguu and Rena to fall into depression. During one final meeting, Rena met with her mother but remained silent. Mr. Ryuuguu had provided a letter for Reiko, but when Rena asked her to read it, she refused. That encounter marked the end of their relationship, and it was the last time Reiko met with Rena.
