Aida, Kensuke

Summary

Kensuke Aida is a fourteen-year-old military enthusiast and self-proclaimed otaku who serves as Toji’s closest friend. Born on September 12, 2001, with type B blood, he is a student in the same class as Shinji, Toji, Rei, Asuka, and Hikari, and is also identified as one of the "Other Children," a group of potential Eva pilot candidates. His leisure activities involve solo simulated war reenactments and camping in the mountains around Tokyo-3. Kensuke is rarely without his camcorder. His bond with Shinji strengthens after Shinji rescues both him and Toji during the battle against the fourth Angel, Shamshel. Kensuke harbors a persistent dream of becoming an Eva pilot, constantly pressuring Shinji to use his connections within NERV to secure him a position, even though Shinji explains that he holds no influence over such decisions. Despite his enthusiasm, Kensuke appears unaware of the severe physical and psychological toll borne by the pilots. He nonetheless relishes the perks of being associated with a pilot, accompanying Shinji and Toji on a trip to the UN combined naval fleet during the transport of Unit 02. Like most of Shinji’s classmates, Kensuke’s mother is deceased. He shares Toji’s attraction to Misato Katsuragi. The character is named after a protagonist in Ryu Murakami’s novel The Fascism of Love and Fantasies (Ai to Gensou no Fascism) and bears a visual resemblance to Jean from Hideaki Anno’s earlier work, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water.
