Summary
Nodoka Haramura serves as a protagonist in the Saki series and appears as a supporting character in the spin-off manga Saki: Achiga-hen - Episode of Side-A. A first-year student at Kiyosumi High School in Nagano Prefecture, she has been playing online mahjong since childhood and eventually developed a deep passion for the game. Her father, an attorney, disapproves of her interest but does not forbid it. Due to her mother’s work assignments, Nodoka’s family relocates to a new city every two to three years. She moves to Nara Prefecture before her final year of elementary school, where she attends Achiga Girls' Academy for middle school. During this time, she befriends Shizuno Takakamo and briefly joins the school’s mahjong club. After one year at Achiga, her family moves to Nagano, where Nodoka enters Takatoobara Middle School and meets Yuuki Kataoka. The two join the mahjong club and team up with younger players Hiroko Murohashi and Maho Yumeno. Although Takatoobara fails to qualify for the national middle school tournament, Nodoka wins the individual event at the national level. This victory brings her significant publicity, with the media frequently exaggerating her abilities by labeling her a mahjong genius. While her family plans to move again after she finishes middle school, Nodoka wishes to stay in Nagano to attend Kiyosumi High School alongside Yuuki. Her father reluctantly agrees, and she sets her sights on winning the national high school championship. Upon entering Kiyosumi, Nodoka meets fellow first-year Saki Miyanaga. She is initially devastated to discover that Saki’s mahjong skills surpass her own, leading to feelings of contempt. However, this attitude eventually fades as the two grow closer. They form a bond with the shared goal of reaching the national high school mahjong team tournament alongside Yuuki and their senior teammates.
