Kasanoda, Ritsu
Summary
Ritsu Kasanoda is the heir to the third-generation leadership of the Kasanoda-gumi, the most powerful yakuza syndicate in the Kantō region of Japan. Raised from a young age to assume the mantle of boss, he is widely perceived as an intimidating figure, which has resulted in a lack of close friendships. His fearsome reputation is anchored by his long red hair and a naturally stern visage. Because his features have been imposing since birth, his father believed he possessed the ideal countenance for the most terrifying yakuza boss in history and rigorously trained him to project an image of toughness and aloofness. Consequently, Kasanoda speaks sparingly and has a short temper, though beneath this hardened exterior lies a genuinely kind individual who finds joy in assisting others. Various urban legends surround his persona. Rumors claim that meeting his gaze induces three months of nightmares, while a shoulder bump from him will land a person in the hospital. Furthermore, talking back to him is said to result in an immediate trip to the graveyard. Within his school, he is known by the moniker "human blizzard." Initially, Kasanoda seeks to apprentice under Morinozuka, aspiring to earn the same level of respect and admiration. He is drawn to Morinozuka, whom he describes as having "a face as intimidating as that of the guard dogs of Hell," hoping to learn how to forge friendships and enjoy social interactions. During his time with the Host Club, he endures some humiliation as the members persistently nickname him "Casanova-kun" or "Bossa Nova-kun." Later experiences involving a household member named Tetsuya reveal that his family is already aware of his gentle nature; they simply refrain from mentioning it, knowing he is kind-hearted yet shy and easily embarrassed. Kasanoda becomes the first person outside the Host Club to discover Haruhi’s true gender after inadvertently walking into a room too quickly. Prior to this revelation, he harbored a confused crush on her, which evolves into genuine romantic feelings. He joins the Host Club as a customer and attempts to confess his emotions, but Haruhi rejects him without any malicious intent. Although Haruhi is typically perceptive of others' emotions, she remains oblivious to romantic interest directed at her. She views Kasanoda as a supportive friend, particularly because he offered to be someone who knew her secret, allowing her to relax. When Kyoya informs Kasanoda that Haruhi must maintain a male persona for "special reasons," he resolves to avoid causing her trouble by publicly declaring they will be friends forever, thereby sparing her from being judged for a romantic association with him. Unaware that the "special reasons" are merely Haruhi’s debt to the club, he makes this sacrifice. Following this incident, his longing for companionship is fulfilled when the Host Club members, both hosts and customers, unanimously agree to become his friends. In volume 9, he gifts Haruhi a tomato plant, and updates indicate he has joined the school’s Gardening Society. In episode 25 of the anime, he is depicted surrounded by female students; while he appears embarrassed, he is not angry. Notably, several members of his household are covertly observing his school life from behind the bushes during this scene.
