Summary

Sakai Yuuji is the main male protagonist of the story, portrayed as an ordinary high school student whose life is upended when he discovers he is already dead and fading from existence. Classified as a Mystes and holding the title of World-Converting Ascetic, Yuuji possesses the treasure Reiji Maigo within him. This artifact restores his Power of Existence every night at midnight, allowing him to survive as long as he prevents his existence from vanishing before that time. Over time, he begins to unlock the untapped potential of this treasure. Personality-wise, Yuuji is a kind individual who consistently prioritizes others over himself. This altruism often confuses and annoys Shana, as previous Torches she encountered were typically selfish. However, his compassion and empathy eventually spark attraction between him and Shana. He accepts his doomed fate without bitterness, a trait that surprises the Flame-Haired Burning-Eyed Hunter, given that most Torches would become depressed or even commit suicide before their existence fades. Instead, Yuuji embraces his mortality to perform heroic acts, believing that his sacrifice serves as proof that he once lived. Despite his heroic endeavors, Yuuji struggles to maintain the ordinary life he once knew while simultaneously helping Shana in her battles and protecting Misaki City and its inhabitants. His relationship with Shana is complex; although he cares deeply for her, he holds back from advancing their romance due to feelings of inferiority as a Torch and viewing her as someone beyond his reach. He also begins to see the world through Shana’s former perspective, recognizing himself merely as a Torch and her as a Flame Haze. Consequently, he distances himself from the closeness they originally shared.
