Summary
Masahiko Umezawa initially served as the ringleader of the bullying group targeting Ippo in high school, sporting the pompadour hairstyle typical of Japanese delinquents. His attitude shifted once Ippo turned professional, transforming Umezawa into a devoted follower. Although their dynamic evolved from adversarial to friendly by graduation, Umezawa was reluctant to acknowledge this change at the time. He was originally depicted as hostile and in denial about his friendship with Ippo, but post-graduation, he shed his tough-guy persona to become a more amiable and humorous character. Throughout his school days and subsequent employment at the Makunouchi Fishing Boat, he was a constant presence at Ippo’s bouts, often donning a handmade headband and acting as the boxer’s primary cheerleader. After retiring from the fishing boat to pursue a career as a manga artist, Itagaki Manabu assumed his position. It remains unclear if he continues to attend matches, and he is sometimes considered an avatar for Morikawa Jouji.
