Summary
Kashiwazaki Nenji, better known by his alias Okina, is a formidable warrior and gifted strategist renowned as the sole individual capable of matching the former Oniwabanshū leader in combat. He wields steel tonfa to deflect sword strikes with precision. Although Okina was destined to succeed as the next leader, he declined the role, believing it was the era for the young rather than the old, and instead recommended Aoshi for the position. Consequently, he served as an intelligence agent in Kyoto before eventually retiring and renouncing his fighting lifestyle, despite later engaging in a bout with Aoshi. He now resides peacefully at the Aoiya (House of Malva) in Kyoto, the former Oniwabanshū headquarters which has been converted into a hotel, where he raised Misao. Despite his advanced age, Okina retains a sharp intellect and comprehensive knowledge of Kyoto's inner and outer workings, as the Oniwabanshū's ancient intelligence network remains active. He leverages this network to assist Kenshin in locating Arai Seikū and Hiko Seijūrō. In his personal life, Okina enjoys drinking games and admires beautiful women.
