Summary
Nanashi is a male ronin of implied European descent who bears naturally red hair that he dyes black to conceal his foreign appearance and evade prejudice. Haunted by a traumatic childhood shipwreck that left him as the sole survivor with no memory of his original name or birthplace, he washed ashore in Japan as a red-haired outsider. This early trauma cemented his status as an alien in Japanese society, leading various warlords to exploit him as a tool for committing atrocities. During this period, he honed his skills to become a feared warrior known by many names, including the "Red Demon." Before his life as a wandering, nameless ronin, Nanashi served under Lord Akaike alongside Shogen Itadori. His military career ended when he refused to execute two children of a rival lord; unable to reconcile with the order, he deserted and vowed to keep his katana sheathed and bound. His life changes after a chance encounter with the young boy Kotaro. Agreeing to protect Kotaro as a hired bodyguard, Nanashi is drawn into a series of challenges that test his resolve. One such challenge culminates in a kinetic duel of attrition against Luo Lang "Rarou," a member of the Ming squad known as the Ming Dynasty Warriors. Through his bond with Kotaro, Nanashi begins to re-evaluate his existence, viewing his duty to protect the boy as a form of repentance for the children he killed in his past. This emotional connection marks a significant step in his ongoing journey toward redemption.
