Sadojima, Houji

Summary

Houji Sadojima serves as a devoted subordinate to Shishio, standing as the individual closest to his master alongside Yumi and Soujirou. Formerly an official within the Meiji government, Houji abandoned his post after concluding that the regime lacked worthy leadership. He eventually aligned himself with Shishio, adopting the belief that Japan should be ruled by the principles of basic animal survival under Shishio’s command. Although Houji lacks proficiency in martial combat, he is a cunning organizer with formidable leadership skills, excelling in a staff officer capacity. His logistical prowess is demonstrated by his ability to purchase the Rengoku, a massive ship, on the black market before it is destroyed by Sanosuke, Kenshin, and Saito. Shishio’s intense body heat effectively baptized Houji, instilling in him a deep belief in hell. Houji’s faith in Shishio is absolute; upon learning of Shishio’s fifteen-minute limit, he discarded a hidden gun, trusting only in his master’s strength. When Shishio is ultimately defeated by Kenshin, Houji reacts with utter disbelief and attempts to destroy the complex where the battle occurred, aiming to ensure no victor remains and thus nullify Shishio’s loss. He is rescued from the collapsing structure by Anji and Soujirou. Anji persuades Houji to surrender to the police, and he agrees with the intention of using the criminal courts to propagate Shishio’s ideals. However, at the conclusion of the Shishio arc, it is revealed that Houji takes his own life in prison after government officials deem his voice too dangerous and refuse him a trial. After slitting his throat, he writes a message on the wall in his own blood: "This world is dead to me now. I go to follow my master to hell," expressing his disgust with the Meiji regime and his unwavering loyalty. He is last seen in Hell with Shishio and Yumi, vowing to follow Shishio as he declares his intent to conquer Hell.
