Summary
Francine was a young apple vendor in Prague who bore the stigma of being branded a thief. While many locals looked down on her, she was revered as an angel by the residents of the poorer districts. The brand was inflicted upon her after she stole an egg to feed a sick orphan under her care; the child later died while she was imprisoned. Despite this tragedy, Francine continued to support the orphans through various odd jobs, selflessly giving away her own food to those in need without resentment. She maintained a deep faith, regularly attending church for prayers even while enduring scorn for her evident poverty. Her life changed after meeting Bái Jīn and Bái Yín in Prague. She eventually fell in love with and married Yín, but Jīn kidnapped her just hours later. Following a long journey, the pair settled in a small French village. When Francine fell ill, the villagers, terrified of contagion, confined her to a small hut, where she remained isolated for several years.
