Summary
At the start of the narrative, Tamahome is a seventeen-year-old boy from Kohnan Village in the country of Kounan. He is the eldest son in a large family that includes his father, two brothers named Chuei and Shunkei, and two sisters, Gyokuran and Yuiren. His mother passed away during Yuiren’s birth. Tamahome’s true name is Sou Kishuku, a name derived from the star associated with the Demon or Ogre, which corresponds to the kanji character ‘oni’ branded on his forehead. This mark, often translated as 'ogre,' 'demon,' or 'ghost' in Chinese contexts, has led to him being widely misunderstood and teased throughout his childhood. Physically, he stands 180 cm tall with blood type O and was born on June 28, making him a Cancer. As the first of the seven Celestial Warriors of Suzaku that Miaka encounters, Tamahome enters the story by rescuing her and Yui from slave traders. He is depicted as the strongest among the Suzaku warriors, possessing exceptional skills in martial arts and fencing, the latter trained under Tokaki. He is proficient in both unarmed combat and weapon use, capable of channeling his ki into energy blasts known as Chii Blasts. When driven by emotion, he can utilize his ki to significantly enhance his physical strength, speed, and reflexes during battle. Personality-wise, Tamahome initially appears greedy, vain, and comic, showing interest in helping others only if financial compensation is involved. However, this behavior stems from a deep desire to support his large family. Beneath this cheerful exterior, he is actually shy yet emotionally resilient. He is fundamentally caring, compassionate, loyal, and courageous. His two greatest loves are money and Miaka. Despite his comedic traits, he is a determined and sincere young man who is willing to sacrifice himself for his nakama and refuses to back down from his enemies.
