Dong, Zhuo

Dong, Zhuo

Summary

Dong Zhuo, whose courtesy name was Zhongying, served as a prominent politician and warlord during the turbulent final years of the Eastern Han Dynasty. He capitalized on the chaos that erupted in the capital of Luoyang in 189, following the death of Emperor Ling and the violent conflict between the eunuch faction and court officials headed by General-in-Chief He Jin. Seizing the opportunity, Dong Zhuo took control of the city, deposed Emperor Shao, and installed Emperor Xian on the throne. Although he briefly rose to dominate the Han imperial court, his rule was characterized by tyranny and cruelty. His oppressive governance provoked a coalition of regional officials and warlords to launch a punitive campaign against him the following year. This military pressure forced Dong Zhuo to abandon Luoyang and relocate the capital to Chang'an. His reign ultimately ended in 192 when he was assassinated by his subordinate Lü Bu, an act carried out as part of a conspiracy orchestrated by Interior Minister Wang Yun.
