Summary
Makoto Kyougoku serves as the long-distance boyfriend of Suzuki Sonoko. He is a highly accomplished karateka who attended Haido High School, where he rose to become the team captain and earned the moniker "The Prince of Kicks." His interest in Sonoko initially sparked when he observed her enthusiastically cheering for her friend Ran during a martial arts tournament. Their paths crossed again later when Makoto was working as a waiter at his family’s inn, where he encountered Sonoko alongside Ran and Conan. The couple’s relationship faced a severe threat when Sonoko was targeted by a deranged serial killer. The murderer believed Sonoko had photographed him during a recent crime and sought to silence her, harboring a specific hatred for girls with brown hair. Makoto arrived just in time to rescue her, solidifying her affection for him. However, their time together is frequently limited by his demanding schedule of martial arts competitions and a period of studying abroad. Despite the distance, Sonoko works hard to maintain their connection through handmade gifts and trinkets, while Makoto remains steadfastly loyal. He often finds himself drawn into Sonoko’s whimsical romantic plans and has repeatedly demonstrated his combat prowess by rescuing Conan, Sonoko, and Ran from life-threatening situations. Personality-wise, Makoto is typically calm and observant, especially during crises. His composure is primarily disrupted by his feelings for Sonoko, to whom he is deeply devoted, sometimes even abandoning important tournaments to see her. Yet, his shyness around her, coupled with his dedication to training and competitive nature, creates obstacles that make their relationship challenging. Eventually, Sonoko introduces him to her parents, who come to approve of him. Widely regarded as one of the most formidable teenage martial artists in the series, Makoto has won numerous international karate championships. He maintained an impressive global win streak of 400 matches, a record that was only broken when he forfeited a tournament to attend the introduction to Sonoko’s family.
