Summary

Sakuranbou is Sakura’s wandering monk uncle, though he prefers to go by the English name Cherry. His actual name, Sakuranbou, translates literally to “cherry,” but the kanji reading can also signify “deranged monk,” a description that fits his behavior well enough that he opts for the English moniker. He claims to possess remarkable spiritual powers, using them primarily to predict doom for Ataru, a feat that hardly strains his abilities. Cherry has a peculiar habit of appearing out of nowhere, often emerging from bizarre locations. His comedic role is amplified by his unattractive face and extremely short stature. Although he has taken a vow of asceticism and resides in a tent in an empty lot near Ataru’s home, this discipline apparently excludes food, as he is a notorious mooch. Observers have noted that Grandpa Hino from Sailor Moon bears a striking resemblance to Cherry.
