Koenma

Summary

King Enma Jr., commonly known as Koenma, serves as the heir to the spirit realm and is the official who appointed Yusuke Urameshi as a spirit detective. His name derives from his father’s title, Enma, combined with the Japanese word for child. He is voiced by Mayumi Tanaka in Japanese and by Sean Teague in the Funimation dub, with Brianne Siddall and Eric Stuart providing voices for the first and second films, respectively. Although he appears as a toddler, Koenma is at least 700 years old and possesses vast knowledge of the universe. He often provides comic relief and can act cowardly, yet he will assist Yusuke and his friends if they face immediate danger. Generally perceived as a kind and effective leader, Koenma handles the judgment of souls for Heaven or Hell, a duty he assumed because his father, King Enma, is frequently away on business. To avoid mockery from Yusuke and Kuwabara, he can transform into a teenage form. He retains a Jr. sign on his forehead and a pacifier that stores his spirit energy. This energy can be released as the Mafukkan, the spirit realm’s most powerful defensive spell, allowing him to seal demons of varying strength, including S-class apparitions with ease. Koenma initiated the Spirit Detective program and felt personally responsible for Shinobu Sensui’s actions, even preparing to suffer eternally alongside him as atonement. He sided with Yusuke against the Spirit Defense Force’s desire to execute him for being a Mazoku, effectively betraying his father. This led to a brief exile in the human world before he returned to the spirit realm. In the manga, Koenma eventually overthrows Enma after discovering that his father had intentionally allowed demons into the human world to incite conflict.
