Summary

Formerly known as Aokiji, Kuzan served as one of the three Marine admirals before being nominated by Sengoku for the role of fleet admiral. After losing the election to Sakazuki, commonly known as Akainu, he chose to resign from the organization. He is characterized by an extremely relaxed demeanor, rarely showing shock or surprise at any situation. His self-described motto of lazy justice often leads others to doubt his capability as a high-ranking Marine, yet he will intervene if he deems a matter significant, such as when he used his powers to create a path for injured castaways on Long Ring Long Land. Among the admirals, he appears to be the most compassionate, having assisted Tonjit in crossing the ocean and allowing Nico Robin to flee during the Buster Call on Ohara. He harbors a dislike for the Shichibukai, particularly Crocodile, noting that he spared Luffy only because Luffy had defeated him. In contrast to his fellow admiral Sakazuki, Kuzan possesses a strong sense of honor, keeping his promise not to attack the Straw Hats after accepting a one-on-one duel with Luffy. While his specific alignment remains ambiguous, he likely adheres to Moral Justice, finding Sakazuki’s brutal methods, such as those employed during the Ohara Incident, repulsive. Nevertheless, he understands the demands of his rank, freezing Jaguar D. Saul after Ohara and engaging Luffy and Whitebeard during the Marineford War. As Aokiji, he was a loyal follower of the World Government who generally obeyed orders, though his personal ideals sometimes conflicted with official directives. Like other characters such as Jaguar D. Saul and Smoker, witnessing the senseless slaughter of innocents may have led him to question the morality of the World Government. His calm attitude while carrying out grim duties mirrors that of Borsalino, marking him as a complex figure. Although he did not particularly desire the position of fleet admiral, he opposed Sakazuki’s ascension enough to fight him, ultimately resigning rather than serving under Akainu’s command.
