Summary

Keroberos, often called Kero, serves as the appointed guardian of the tome containing the Clow Cards. He is one of two magical beings created by Clow Reed, the other being his brother Yue. Before passing away, Clow designated Kero to choose the next master of the cards, a role he fulfills by selecting Sakura after she accidentally releases them. He then instructs her on the basics of capturing the cards. Possessing extensive knowledge of mysticism, Kero remains by Sakura’s side after she passes the final judgment, acting as her friend, companion, adviser, and protector against new threats. Kero speaks with a distinct Osakan accent, a result of his long stay in the book while it was kept in Osaka. He can be bossy, demanding, egotistical, and a glutton, though he shows clear affection for Sakura, particularly when she is hurt or in danger. He has developed a fondness for TV games and is addicted to sweets. Most of the time, he appears in a false form, resembling a small orange stuffed animal with wings. Unlike Yue, Kero draws life energy from the sun and does not rely on his master’s magical power. However, controlling the Firey and Light cards is necessary to power his true form, a large-winged cat. In the anime, the Firey card is replaced by the Earthy card to prevent delays in obtaining his true form. His name is derived from Cerberus, the three-headed beast from Greek mythology that guarded the gates of Hades. In the anime adaptation, his false form is voiced by Aya Hisakawa, while his hidden form is voiced by Masaya Onosaka. The English release of the anime spells his name as Kerberos, whereas the English adaptation, Cardcaptors, uses Keroberos. In this version, his false form is voiced by Matt Hill, and Richard Newman voices his true form. In the second film, Wendee Lee and Dave Wittenberg provide the voices for his respective forms.
