Summary
Born on October 27, Kaien Shiba stood 183 cm tall and weighed 68 kg. He served as the lieutenant of the 13th Division under Captain Juushiro Ukitake until his death at the hands of a Hollow, an event that also claimed the life of his wife, Miyako Shiba. Kaien was an ethical and outspoken man with a rough disposition, yet his down-to-earth nature earned him deep admiration from the members of the 13th Division. He treated colleagues with equal respect regardless of their social standing or rank, making him popular among both aristocrats and commoners within his unit. He was the first person in Seireitei to treat Rukia as an ordinary person after she was adopted into the Kuchiki family. Prior to Kaien’s arrival, she was handled with excessive caution and discussed critically behind her back. Rukia appreciated Kaien’s egalitarian treatment of her, and it was hinted that she may have developed romantic feelings for him, though she did not pursue the relationship because he was already married to Miyako, the third seat of the 13th Division. Kaien held a unique philosophy regarding one’s "heart," believing it was defined by the drive to fight and protect. He aligned with Captain Ukitake’s doctrine of two combat types: fighting to protect life and fighting to protect honor. Kaien viewed these as ultimately converging into a single concept: "Heart." He believed that a connection between individuals birthed a piece of "heart" between them, existing not internally but in the memories and thoughts of others. He felt this essence persisted even after death, leading him to assert that no one should die alone. In his personal life, Kaien enjoyed ohagi and appreciated taking afternoon naps when possible.
