Summary

Kuwabara, universally known by his surname, holds the title of the second toughest student at Sarayashiki Junior High School, a position he constantly strives to seize from Yusuke Urameshi. According to the manga, he had never suffered a defeat in combat prior to his encounter with Yusuke. He commands a gang that includes himself alongside Kirishima, Okubo, and Sawamura, who is named Komada in the English dub. Despite his rough exterior, Kuwabara possesses a soft spot for kittens, including his own pet named Eikichi, and adheres to a strict code of honor. His romantic interests shift from a minor crush on Botan upon their first meeting to intense feelings for the ice apparition Yukina, whom he does not realize is Hiei’s sister. Kuwabara has an older sister, Shizuru Kuwabara, who is one of only two characters, along with Yukina, to address him by his given name, Kazuma. In the anime adaptation, their parents are never shown or acknowledged. However, Kuwabara’s father makes a brief appearance in the final manga volume, revealing that Yukina will reside with the family and indicating his awareness of the Reikai. As the story progresses, the relationship between Kuwabara and Yusuke transforms from rivalry to a deep friendship, though the two continue to argue frequently. Kuwabara maintains a cordial relationship with Kurama, while his interactions with Hiei are marked by mutual animosity, despite their underlying camaraderie. His most distinctive ability is Spirit Awareness, or sensitivity to Reiki, which he and his friends refer to as "the Tickle." This power allows him to detect ghosts and paranormal activity, see spirits and demons, and predict the motives of others. Kuwabara can also manifest a Rei Ken, or Spirit Sword, from his own spirit energy. Initially requiring a piece of wood as a physical medium, he mastered the ability to summon the sword independently after a month of practice, or six months in the English anime. During his training, he learned to extend and retract his blade at will and could even wield two swords simultaneously. Unlike his teammates, Kuwabara can be reckless, yet he remains extremely loyal to his friends and upholds a rigorous moral code. He is willing to go to any lengths for his companions and for love, while also demonstrating cunning in battle when necessary. He is widely regarded as the nicest member of the group.
