Gyokuyou

Summary

A young girl known for crafting and selling sweets, she appears alongside her mother in The Twelve Kingdoms: Sea of Shadow. In the novels, she is called Kuyo and makes a fleeting appearance when she and her mother encounter Youko in the forests of Kou. Observing that Youko is exhausted and on the verge of collapse, Kuyo offers sugar water to help with rehydration. Despite their offer for Youko to join them in a nearby town for the night, Youko declines, her deep-seated distrust of others stemming from repeated betrayals preventing her from accepting their aid. The pair crosses paths with Youko again as she travels toward En, at which point Kuyo asks about her well-being, mentioning that her mother had noted Youko’s grumpiness was due to fatigue. Youko expresses her gratitude for their kindness before they part ways, as she continues her search for Rakushun. In the anime adaptation, the roles of both Gyokuyo and her mother are expanded, with the girl traveling alongside her mother and a troupe of performers. Like her mother, she is identified as a shusei.
