Summary
Kawabata serves as the captain of the vessel that transports the Ushiromiya family to and from Rokkenjima. Following the tragic murder incident on the island, he carried a sense of partial guilt for his inability to retrieve the family earlier, even though severe typhoon conditions had otherwise made such a rescue impossible. In 1998, he agreed to ferry Ange to Rokkenjima with the hope that doing so would provide him with a sense of closure.
