Summary
Mitsukake serves as the healer among Suzaku’s Celestial Warriors, distinguished by his soft-spoken demeanor and serious nature. Born in Sōen Village near Chōkō in the northern Kōnan region, he is twenty-two years old and holds the true name Juan Myō, associated with the Star Chariot. While his physical combat skills are limited to his own strength, he possesses immense healing abilities as a Celestial Warrior, though these powers drain his own life force. He frequently uses this gift for minor injuries, but recovering from treating life-threatening wounds requires a full day to regenerate his vitality. His companion, a cat named Tama, acts as an unofficial mascot for the group and later becomes Chichiri’s pet following Mitsukake’s death. The son of a country doctor, Mitsukake assisted his father with medical rounds until his father died saving villagers during a storm that also claimed the lives of Chichiri’s loved ones. Following the death of Shōka, a local noblewoman and his romantic interest, he abandoned conventional medicine to search for a miracle herb capable of curing any ailment. During this reclusive period, Miaka and her companions persuaded him to join their cause, though he continued to cherish Shōka’s memory. Despite his quiet and expressionless exterior, he is kind-hearted and calm, though his shyness makes him appear aloof. He shows particular compassion toward the weak, the elderly, the sick, children, and animals. In the conflict between Konan and Kutō, he is severely injured by Nakago. Ultimately, Mitsukake sacrifices his life to save a child revealed to be the reincarnation of Shōka, as well as the other wounded soldiers, expending all his energy in the process.
