Kawachi, Daikichi
Summary
Daikichi is a thirty-year-old bachelor whose intimidating appearance tends to frighten both women and children. Although he does not mind unsettling kids due to his general dislike of young people, he suffers from loneliness in his single life. This changes at his grandfather’s funeral, where he encounters Rin, a newly orphaned illegitimate child. Outraged by his relatives’ cold treatment of the girl, Daikichi declares that he will raise her. Consequently, he must adapt his life to assume the role of a father. Lacking strong motivation beyond his daily job, Daikichi is inexperienced with children and has much to learn about proper care. However, his laid-back demeanor and honest work ethic allow him to figure things out as he goes. His patient, awkward, gentle, and straightforward nature contrasts sharply with Rin’s shy wit. Despite his constant learning curve and the mistakes he makes as a new parent, his efforts are endearing.
