Doubleday, Abner

Doubleday, Abner

Summary

Abner Doubleday serves as the tall, lanky translator for the admiral. His name references the figure once credited with inventing baseball, a theory now widely debunked. He is constantly at hand to interpret Cartwright’s commands, stiffly informing villagers that their polite refusals are irrelevant because he delivers orders, not requests. Serving as the pitcher for the American team, Doubleday turns malicious after the opposing side vows no mercy, deliberately aiming to injure the batters. He manages to reach base thanks to Mugen’s erratic pitching style, which forces a one-on-one confrontation after his teammates are eliminated. Doubleday throws his bat at Mugen and endures a pitch to the face, yet he loses the duel because Mugen manages to stand up afterward.
