Kindaichi, Hajime

Summary

Hajime Kindaichi is a high school student characterized by his laziness, lack of motivation, and lecherous tendencies, which frequently exasperate his childhood friend, Miyuki Nanase. While most observers miss it, a select few recognize his exceptional intellect and deductive skills, which stem from an 180 IQ potentially inherited from his grandfather, private detective Kosuke Kindaichi. Kosuke was a fictional character created by author Seishi Yokomizo, often dubbed the "Japanese Columbo." The series creators initially lacked permission from Yokomizo’s family to use the character, leading to complaints when the series gained popularity; the dispute was reportedly settled without litigation, and Kosuke’s status as Hajime’s grandfather was not explicitly confirmed in later episodes. Hajime is known for his catchphrases, declaring "In the name of my grandfather..." when dedicating himself to solving murder mysteries, and announcing "This mystery is solved!" to signal to readers that they possess all the necessary facts to deduce the culprit’s identity and methods. He is also a skilled practitioner of sleight of hand. Although he was initially unpopular with girls, his inherent kindness has won over many female characters, including Miyuki Nanase, Reika Hayami, and Sakura Izumi. Despite his clumsiness and various flaws, he remains a loyal friend and an outstanding detective.
