Summary

Chiaotzu is a diminutive, doll-like human with pale skin and rosy cheeks, a name derived from the food jiaozi. Initially introduced as a student of the Crane Hermit, who rivals Master Roshi, and the inseparable companion of fellow student Tien, he eventually turns over a new leaf and allies himself with Goku and his friends. Although he lacks the physical strength of other superhuman warriors in Dragon Ball, Chiaotzu possesses significant psionic abilities, particularly psychokinesis. He demonstrates a lack of formal education during the Tien Shinhan Saga, most notably when he refers to Krillin as a "squid" because of his shaved head. When Krillin retorts that Chiaotzu is also bald, the small man removes his cap to reveal a single hair on his head, much to Krillin’s frustration. Chiaotzu ultimately loses his match in the 22nd Martial Arts Tournament to Krillin, who defeats him using mathematical knowledge. Chiaotzu’s narrative significance wanes considerably after his major role in the Tenshinhan Saga. He appears as a minor character in the subsequent Demon King Piccolo, Piccolo Junior, and Vegeta sagas, serving primarily as a background figure in later arcs. However, he holds a prominent position in the Dragon Ball movie Mystical Adventure.
