Summary
Kensei Ma first appears in Battle 7. He is a 41 to 42-year-old Sei master of Katsujin Ken, standing 158cm tall and weighing 53kg. His preferred martial art is All Chinese Kenpo, specifically utilizing soft forms. As the second oldest of the six Ryozanpaku masters, Kensei is a lecherous figure who constantly attempts to take revealing photos of beautiful women, including Shigure and Miu. This behavior frequently incurs their wrath, yet he persists despite their anger. Although he currently presents as a balding, short, and perverted old man, he was once a charming and handsome youth who was highly popular with women. Kensei shares a close, father-son-like bond with Kenichi. While Kensei comically mistreats Kenichi like the other masters, Kenichi views him with deep respect and never doubts his training methods or his beliefs as a master. Kensei often convinces Kenichi to cooperate with their plans, such as persuading him to move into Ryozanpaku, and occasionally swindles him into purchasing the perverted photos he takes, although Kenichi notes in the D&D arc that he mostly receives pictures of Tochumaru posing. Despite his flaws, Kenichi acknowledges that they are nothing compared to the greatness of Ma Sifu. Beneath his sly exterior, Kensei is kind and wise, saddened by the violent use of martial arts and wishing for a more peaceful world. In combat, he aims to disable opponents without lethal force, only abandoning this principle when fighting other Master class Martial Artists. He is known for yelling "Chowa" during fights and has a habit of addressing the other masters by adding "don" to their names. Ironically, he is the only master capable of cooking, stepping in when Miu is unable to do so. Later in the series, it is revealed that Kensei has a wife and three children, including a 16-year-old daughter named Ma Renka who followed him from China. He was formerly the leader of an elite martial arts alliance in China with thousands of students, but he found the responsibilities troublesome. He delegated control to his wife and moved to Japan to operate an acupuncture clinic. Additionally, he has an older brother, Ma Sougetsu, who is a member of the Yami One Shadow Nine Fists and bears the symbol of the Moon.
