Summary
Volkner was initially mentioned by Tower Tycoon Palmer in the episode Challenging a Towering Figure!, who noted that Ash’s battle prowess would give Volkner a shock. He made his physical debut in DP165, where it was revealed that he had known Flint since their youth, evolving from rivals into close friends. After becoming a Gym Leader, Volkner utilized his engineering skills to design the walkways of Sunyshore City and other technological improvements, including the Sunyshore Tower that powers the entire city. Eventually, he grew weary of combat and began handing out badges for free, but his interest in fighting was reignited after watching Ash duel Flint. This encounter motivated him to accept Ash’s challenge for a proper Gym battle.
