Summary
Chichiri, a wandering monk originally from a village near the northern Kōnan-Kutō border along the Shōryū River, is a 24-year-old native born under the Well star. His true name is Houjun Ri, and he has trained for years under Taiitsukun, the creator, who taught him various magical techniques. He initially learned to create protective barriers and subsequently mastered the use of a shakujō staff, a kasa hat, and a kesa mantle in combat. As the oldest and wisest of the Suzaku warriors, Chichiri views himself as an older brother figure to the group. Although Tamahome and Hotohori serve as the visible leaders, Chichiri acts as a steadfast adviser and supporter, operating from behind the scenes. He presents a superficially lighthearted demeanor, capable of adopting super deformed chibi frivolity or shifting abruptly to a serious and grim tone. Possessing a Zen master’s detached attitude, he remains unconcerned with mortality or earthly desires. He frequently concludes his sentences with the emphatic phrase "no da," which translates to "ya know" in the anime’s English version, though it was omitted from the English dub.
