Summary
Shana, also known as the "Flaming-Haired, Blazing-Eyed Hunter," is a Flame Haze contracted to Alastor, the "Flame of the Heavens," who resides within her and communicates via a necklace. Although physically appearing as an 11- or 12-year-old girl with a height of 141 cm and a weight of 37 kg, she is immortal. Her signature weapon is the Nietono no Shana. Visually, she is characterized by jet-black hair that reaches nearly to her feet, dark brown pupils, and a fair complexion. When she invokes her Flame Haze powers, her hair and eyes turn fiery crimson, with embers fluttering from her body. Her attire has evolved over time; initially, she wore all-black clothing with her Treasure Tool, Yogasa, appearing as a trench coat. After settling in Misaki City, she typically dons the Misaki City Municipal High School uniform, wearing the Yogasa as a cape during combat, and later wears a red-and-black frilly dress while residing in the Seireiden. Born without a name, Shana was given hers by Yuuji after he named her after her sword. As a Flame Haze, she is sworn to protect the world's balance by hunting Guze no Tomogara, monsters from the Crimson Realm who harvest the Power of Existence from humans. She is widely feared and recognized as one of the most powerful Flame Haze in existence, possessing abilities such as wielding flames, manipulating the Power of Existence, extrasensory perception, and flight via wings of flame. Her immense power allowed her to survive Friagne's Trigger Happy attack because she contained a capacity within dimensional space, leading Alastor to refer to her as "The Great One." Despite this power, Sophie Sawallisch notes her lack of battle experience, a flaw that led to her defeat by Margery Daw, a specialist in the Power of Unrestraint. Shana’s personality is shaped by her upbringing. Raised primarily by Wilhelmina, Shiro, and Alastor, she was focused heavily on her physical and mental training as a warrior, neglecting social development. This resulted in her being highly intelligent and excelling in exams and Physical Education, yet naive in social situations, famously asking Chigusa how babies are made. Initially, Shana viewed humans with indifference and saw Yuuji merely as a Torch, albeit an interesting one due to his status as a Mystes. However, through Yuuji’s influence, she gradually opened up, learning to view him as a person and developing romantic feelings for him. She often masks her jealousy and confusion regarding human traits with her catchphrase, "Urusai! Urusai! Urusai!" ("Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!"), though she genuinely cares for Yuuji. She also has a strong fondness for sweets, particularly melon bread. The series is driven by Shana’s relationship with Yuuji, who is her love interest and rival to Kazumi Yoshida. Shana treats Kazumi with contempt initially but eventually becomes friendlier toward her. She receives orders from Alastor and guidance from her mentor Wilhelmina Carmel. Shana also looks to Chigusa Sakai for social advice when Alastor and Wilhelmina are unable to help. Her journey involves navigating chaotic new emotions like love, jealousy, and loneliness, which initially cause her to make rash decisions. Eventually, she realizes that fighting alongside Yuuji enhances her abilities, allowing her to become more proficient in battle and more open to her companions.
