Summary
Spenser is a benevolent elder who specializes in herbal medicine and resides on an island he utilizes as a natural battlefield. He first appeared in the episode Cutting the Ties that Bind, where he healed Ash's Sceptile after it seemingly lost its combat abilities. Although he typically rides his Venusaur, he possesses considerable stamina and favors battles that involve extensive movement and the use of the surrounding nature. In the episode Ka Boom with a View, he faced Ash using a Venusaur, Shiftry, and Claydol against Ash's Swellow, Heracross, and Sceptile, during which Sceptile learned SolarBeam. Spenser also owns a Chansey, which he employed to heal Ash's Sceptile. In the manga, Spenser fought alongside Lucy during the Battle Frontier's grand opening press event, commanding a Crobat that used Poison Fang. Having previously touched the Blue Orb, he can identify others who have held it, such as Sapphire. This ability inadvertently caused Ruby and Sapphire to mistakenly suspect him of being Guile Hideout.
