Shoukou

Summary

Shoukou serves as the governor of the Shisui Prefecture within the Wa Province of Kei. His extreme corruption and exorbitant tax demands jeopardize the fragile stability of Youko’s reign as the new Queen of Kei. The situation escalates when Shoukou’s carriage strikes the blind boy Seishuu, prompting Suzu to persuade the resistance movement, led by Koshou and Sekki, that the moment for rebellion against Shoukou has arrived. Youko aligns herself with the rebels after uncovering that Shoukou is responsible for the abduction of her mentor, Enho. In the novel adaptations, Shoukou’s capture reveals him to be immensely obese, though he attempts in vain to conceal his condition. This physical appearance exposes the depth of his corruption and self-indulgence to Youko. Conversely, the anime portrays him as a significantly more sinister figure. He is depicted as slim, confident, and defiant of the Heavens' will, enlisting the help of the half-crazed Asano. However, during his sword fight with Youko, he surrenders upon realizing he is battling the ruler of Kei. Across both media, Suzu advocates for Shoukou’s execution, but Youko forbids it, insisting on interrogating him to identify those who have enabled his crimes.
