Toudou, Izaemon
Summary
Izaemon Toudou held the position of the sixth seated officer within the 9th Division of the Gotei 13, serving directly under Captain Muguruma Kensei. He characterized his appearance by keeping his black hair tied in a high ponytail and wearing a distinctive piece of headgear. His demeanor was typically serious, and he adhered to the standard Shinigami uniform of the 9th Division, layered with a white jacket featuring a high collar that reached his neck. During the Turn Back the Pendulum arc, Toudou was first introduced alongside Muguruma Kensei and other high-ranking seated officers of the 9th Division when they were dispatched to investigate the sudden disappearance of Rukongai residents. He and his division mates rescued a young Hisagi Shuuhei and his friends from a Hollow attack. Following the battle, they learned from the absent Kuna Mashiro that Shinigami were also missing. Kensei deduced the severity of the crisis by correlating the number of empty shihakushou found by Kuna with the size of an earlier vanguard sent for investigation. Recognizing the danger, Kensei tasked Toudou with retrieving a researcher from the 12th Division to determine if a pathogen was responsible. Toudou successfully infiltrated the 12th Division’s laboratory and secured the assistance of Captain Urahara, who assigned Lieutenant Hiyori to help. Later that night, Toudou returned to the camp accompanied by Tousen Kaname. Shinobu Eishima and Tousen were guarding the perimeter when Toudou arrived late. He offered to relieve Tousen of guard duty to allow him a rest, but Tousen insisted that all three maintain their watch together. While Lieutenant Kuna, Kensei, and Third Seat Kasaki Heizou rested, Toudou and the other seated officers were ambushed. When Kensei and Kasaki heard screams and rushed outside, they found Toudou standing over the bodies of the other two officers. Due to his strange behavior, Kensei and Kasaki initially suspected Toudou of being the attacker, but this suspicion was disproven when it was revealed that Toudou had also been killed.
