Summary
Flannery made her debut in the episode "Poetry Commotion!". In this installment, Ash and his traveling companions encounter a fleeing Slugma being chased by a girl with fiery red hair. They soon discover that this individual is Flannery, the newly appointed Gym Leader of Lavaridge Town, who was in the midst of training with her Pokemon. Unbeknownst to them, they receive covert assistance from disguised operatives who are actually Jessie and James of Team Rocket, as well as an elderly man and a judge who is revealed to be Flannery’s grandfather. The crisis is resolved when Flannery’s grandfather intervenes to thwart Team Rocket’s attempt to steal her Torkoal. During the ensuing battle against Team Rocket, one of Flannery’s Slugma undergoes evolution into a Magcargo. Later, in the episode "Going, Going, Yawn!", Ash challenges Flannery for his Gym Battle. The match sees Ash deploying Corphish, Pikachu, and Treecko against Flannery’s team. Although Corphish is afflicted by a Yawn from Flannery’s Slugma, Ash successfully defeats Torkoal, securing victory and earning the Heat Badge.
