Naoko Akagi served as the mother of Ritsuko and was the chief technician at Gehirn, where she designed the MAGI system. During her tenure, she entered a romantic relationship with the recently widowed Gendo Ikari. However, her perspective shifted after Rei encountered her, leading Naoko to realize that Gendo had manipulated her feelings to guarantee her professional performance. Consumed by rage upon this revelation, Naoko strangled Rei to death. She subsequently took her own life, an act witnessed by Ritsuko, who also saw the murder of Rei. While some sources suggest she may have been killed by an unknown assailant, the manga volume 10 depicts her committing suicide immediately after killing Rei. Following these tragic events, Gehirn was dissolved and replaced by Nerv.
