Summary
Death the Kid is an immortal Shinigami and a Meister at Shibusen, born from a fragment of Shinigami’s soul. He serves as the Meister for Patricia "Patti" Thompson and Elizabeth "Liz" Thompson, who are also known as the Death Scythe twins. Due to his lineage, Kid was isolated by other students who feared proximity to the son of Shinigami. His life changed when he formed a bond with Liz and Patti, becoming their first true comrades. He is deeply grateful for their loyalty, as they are among the few who do not fear him. Kid suffers from obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, manifesting as an intense obsession with symmetry and perfection. This condition, referred to in the Book of Eibon as the Madness of Order, causes him to break down in fits if he notices asymmetry. He may abandon missions to correct minor imperfections, such as a crooked picture frame or uneven toilet paper. He refuses to fight unless his surroundings and equipment are perfectly symmetrical, often rejecting battles against asymmetrical enemies even if they appear symmetrical. A significant source of his stress is the three white stripes on the left side of his bangs. He has called himself "useless asymmetrical garbage" when this trait is highlighted. His attempt to dye his hair to achieve symmetry failed because his Reaper body rejects all chemicals, including dye. His favorite number is eight, valued for its symmetry and divisibility. This fixation is evident in his interactions, such as his distressed reaction when Soul asked him to arrive at seven, insisting that eight is the only acceptable number. He also becomes agitated when Black☆Star damages the symmetry of his father’s school spikes. Despite his strict standards, Kid tolerates his father’s asymmetrical cloak and the asymmetrical arm positions required by his Death God Martial Art, "Stance of Sin," demonstrating that his love for his father and martial discipline can override his OCPD. Personality-wise, Kid is typically mature, calm, and precise. He respects others' decisions regarding symmetry, though he may exhibit childish breakdowns when his obsession is triggered. He is unaffected by nudity, a trait attributed to his mature nature rather than a lack of interest. During a battle with a female clown who attempted to distract him with her exposed body, Patti noted that Kid would not be swayed. This indifference extends to his apparent asexuality, a trait shared with his father, Shinigami, who showed no interest in gender or flirtation. When Blair’s towel fell off in Soul and Maka’s apartment, Kid reacted with disgust rather than arousal. Kid genuinely cares for his friends and is capable of socializing, though he often appears introverted and prefers working alone. He shows concern for Soul’s scar and threatened Gopher to protect Maka. He even sacrificed himself to avoid dragging Liz and Patti into the Book of Eibon. Maka notes that while matching wavelengths with multiple weapons is difficult, Kid succeeds because of the strong connection between the twins and their admiration for him. As a Shinigami, Kid does not need to collect souls to survive, but he chooses to do so to create a weapon of his own specifications. His father noted that because he uses two non-symmetrical guns, he must collect 198 human souls and two witch souls, double the standard amount. Kid accepts this burden willingly. He shares a rivalry with Black☆Star, though he may be more susceptible to madness. While Black☆Star and Maka resisted the Madness of Order in the Book of Eibon, Kid succumbed quickly, possibly due to his OCPD or his desire for a perfect world. Despite his flaws, Kid’s goal remains noble: to follow in his father’s footsteps and create a peaceful, safe world.
