Summary

Edward "Fullmetal Alchemist" Elric is a young alchemical prodigy and the youngest State Alchemist ever recognized by the Amestris State Military, having earned the title at age 12. Born in Resembool, Amestris, in the winter of 1899 to Trisha Elric and Van Hohenheim, Edward’s early years were happy until his father’s sudden departure and his mother’s death from illness in 1904. Grieving, Edward and his younger brother Alphonse vowed to resurrect their mother using alchemy. They lived with their childhood friend Winry Rockbell and her grandmother Pinako while self-teaching the craft, but eventually sought instruction from the skilled alchemist Izumi Curtis. After passing her preliminary test, the brothers underwent intensive training in alchemy and martial arts. Despite Izumi’s warnings that death is irreversible and integral to the "One is All, All is One" concept, they returned home and attempted Human Transmutation. The ritual triggered a Rebound, pulling them into The Gate where they encountered Truth. Edward lost his left leg for glimpsing the knowledge within the Gate, while Alphonse lost his entire body. To save his brother, Edward sacrificed his right arm, binding Al’s soul to an antique suit of armor using a Blood Rune. Edward survived with a right automail arm and left automail leg, crafted by Winry, which he considers the finest in Amestris. Though small at 149 cm, he possesses the physique of a seasoned martial artist and uses his automail limbs in combat, often transforming them into blades or shields. Motivated by a desire to restore his brother’s body, Edward displays selflessness, earning a reputation as a hero, though he can be immature and occasionally paralyzed by fear. After the failed transmutation, Roy Mustang visited the Rockbells, encouraging the boys to become State Alchemists in hopes of finding a way to restore their bodies. Edward adapted to his prosthetics remarkably quickly, mastering them by age 11.
