Summary
Yuuji Sakamoto is a seventeen or eighteen-year-old male, standing five feet eleven inches tall, who serves as the class representative for Class F. In this series, the role of class representative is designated for the smartest student within that specific class. Although he hails from Class F, Yuuji displays a cool, collected demeanor and possesses surprisingly high intelligence and foresight that are unexpected for a student of his standing. He was once recognized as a child prodigy, but he ended up in Class F because he refused to study, holding the strong belief that grades do not define everything. In the first volume, his strategic acumen led Class F to a string of victories until a duel against Class A, where he overestimated his knowledge of elementary school-level Japanese history. Following his defeat by Shoko Kirishima, his childhood friend and the top student of their level, the consequences he suffered motivated him to resume his studies. By the later volumes, his test scores improved by leaps and bounds, causing his Shoukanjuu to become reasonably strong in just a few months. It is implied that Yuuji is actually smarter than Shoko. After the tournament in volume two, he acquired a platinum bracelet that allows him to control the size of his Shoukanjuu's force field. This ability enables him to create a one-man army choke point, as humans cannot pass through the barrier. Yuuji bears no ill will toward Shoko, but her unyielding obsession with marrying him since childhood leads him to view her as having a few loose screws. He fears the future if he were to marry her. In the anime, their dynamic is suggested to resemble that of a married couple, though Shoko tends to treat him like a slave. Yuuji shares a close bond with Akihisa, to the point where they can communicate without words. A recurring gag involves Yuuji attempting to decipher complicated expressions on Akihisa’s face and accurately commenting on the series of events that must have transpired. Although he intends this as a joke, he is always spot-on in his assessments. His Shoukanjuu is dressed in an outfit that gives it a punk appearance and is armed with brass knuckles.
